Steps to Create a Game Without Much Hassle!
Who doesn’t love to play video games, so why not create a game of your own?
Over the years it has evolved from Atari style Pacman and Mario to high graphic games like Witcher3 and Battlefield.
Do you ever wonder how these games are made? To create a game is no easy task and a lot of time and effort goes into the need to create a game.
This article aims to give you a basic idea if you wish to create a game.
Although what follows might make it look as though to create a game is easy, always remember that this only to help you get started.
Follow these steps religiously and you will find yourself less confused about the whole process.
1.To Create a Game you must Form your Story-line and the Game Mechanics
The first and most crucial step to create a game is to form the story line.
This can be avoided only if you’re aiming to create a game that has no story line but such games rarely sell.
The degree to which you develop the story may depend on the type of game, and its distinguishing factors.
Always remember to maximize both the game mechanics and the story line whilst keeping a balance between the two.
When you write your story line try to keep it realistic. If by chance you don’t plan on sticking on to realism at least make sure the plot and story is engaging.
To create a game no item in the game should be placed without the story in mind. Another important aspect is the game mechanics.
This could include anything from how the user interacts with the environment to whether its first person or third person.
Always develop both the story line and the mechanics parallel to each other to prevent a mess or a bad user experience.
It is often advised to create a game prototype as soon as possible, which would help determine the worth of the game before much time had been spent on developing it.
2. Decide the Software You’re Going to be Using
For modelling purposes you can use tools such as 3ds Max, Blender, Zbrush or Mudbox. 3ds Max is a package provided by Autodesk.
These are quite effective when dealing with models and everything model-related.
The disadvantage is that 3ds Max isn’t free and so Blender is a popular free alternative .
For audio purposes Audacity, Reason are useful and popular software. Reason is known for being a good audio synthesizer.
For texturing, Photoshop should be the software that you use, considering its infinite possibilities and capabilities when it comes to creating a game.
Crazybump allows you to generate quality normal maps from a texture without having to create it yourself by hand or using special hardware, which can save quite some time.
The final piece of software you will probably need is the game engine.
It basically combines all your assets together, allowing you to create levels, script them and play them.
There are only three game engines that I have any mentionable experience with, and they are all relatively high-level.
These are Unreal Engine 3, Unity and Cryengine 3.
3. The Beginning of Creating a Game of your Own
Now, as you are ready to start to create a game of your own, the most important step is to actually start doing something.
Some concepts you need to know when you finally create a game are given below.
Static meshes are basically objects that make your game look better, but usually not actually serving any purpose, except perhaps to block the player’s path.
Common techniques are poly-modelling and sculpting. Textures are essentially images that are applied to the 3D geometry you have created to add extra realism.
Characters are generally more difficult to create than mere static meshes. To create a character, you first have to prepare what is called a skeleton to go with your character.
The skeleton basically tells the engine how to move the limbs in order to give them a realistic look, deriving its name from the fact that it often resembles the bones of an actual skeleton.
Without it, the computer would simply interpret your model to be a basic set of polygons. After this is completed, different animations should be created, such as walking, running, turning left etc.
Game engines often allow you to edit the scenes in your game directly using a level editor.
A level editor allows you to place objects into the world, rotate and scale them, change their materials, add animation that you have pre-defined, etc.
4. Make Sure you Don’t Deviate From the Purpose of the Game
While the technical aspects of creating a game are dealt with, always remember to stick to the initial purpose of the game.
You could hire/ask some people to review your game by playing it, or even release a public early demo. The feedback you get is crucial and important when it comes to you having to create a game.
Work on the glitches and keep testing your game until the user has a near flawless experience.
A good game is hard to create but is well worth your time if you succeed. The idea has to be original and has to be engaging.
Your most important to tools when you have to create a game is patience and persistence.
You can find me cooking up new ideas to keep myself occupied since I hate staying idle.
I also hope that one day I write something worth plagiarizing 🙂
